Each of the eight markers
tell a small piece of Hurston’s expansive story,
as well as the role she played in the Harlem
Renaissance.
The trail starts at the
Zora Neale Hurston Branch Library, weaves
through parts of east Fort Pierce, and ends at
the Fort Pierce Main Street Headquarters.
Once a circuit used by
local black residents in the ‘50s as a means to
sell their unique Florida paintings to visitors,
the Highwaymen Trail pays homage to the
entrepreneurial spirit and artistic merit of
those who were discriminated against during a
time of civil unrest.
The trail, which covers ten unique locations throughout Fort Pierce, helps tell the stories of those who helped enrich the cultural makeup of the area through their art.
On February 18, 2017, Ft.
Pierce will host the
Florida Highwaymen
Festival, where visitors can come learn more
about their contributions, and gain a better
sense of the artists’ importance to the fabric
of the area’s history.
